So we are at a builders' day in March. They will show how to lay bricks and you can also ask questions. I will address the topic of KS or Ytong there and decide afterwards. Both have advantages and disadvantages, I can't decide yet.

You can build a garage according to Energy Saving Ordinance 1648, nobody cares about thermal insulation there. Furnishing it with brewery sets for every barbecue party is unproblematic – but using it as a fitness room makes it a living space and thus endangers its borderline building privilege, moreover it fails to meet any possible parking space requirements. A hip roof causes more additional costs than you could compensate by doing the masonry yourself. Regarding DIY mason suitability, shuttering blocks would be even better to recommend here – take for such an outbuilding something you can get at daily soup price, it does not need hand-formed platinum bricks. Only shuttering block or plan block should be used, always without bed joints for amateur masons. Calcium silicate brick is nonsense: even if the world is famously going to hell in a handbasket, it is a garage, and one can exaggerate everything (but does not have to).

I would not agree with the recommendation for shuttering blocks, because mixing concrete is laborious or, with delivered concrete, the necessary tools are missing. KS is not nonsense at all but the means of choice, as it brings the most important properties for the garage. Stability, you can hang things properly on it, and space-saving. When building yourself, the only advantage of aerated concrete is the easier processing with a saw.

By nonsense I meant exaggerated. And I also said, just take whatever is on the daily menu without concern. When I read these praises for KS compared to porous bricks or the like, I always think of the "good butter" that those born in the imperial era preferred over margarine out of principle. We are talking about a garage here, mind you, even the butcher master would be fine with tofu for that. In the garage you hang bicycles on the wall, but not motorcycles (especially not with sidecars) - and even if you do: there is surely something in Artur Fischer’s range for that too.

By training room I rather meant something like hanging a punching bag, or setting up a boxing dummy, skipping rope, etc. The garage should definitely not be fully furnished. Furthermore, I have four parking spaces in front of the garage. Shuttering block is out of the question; only the first two rows will be built with it because we need to raise it. It’s also about KS as ratio plan stone that is nowadays glued without joints. The installation is similar to Ytong, only cutting is a bit more complicated.

My current tendency is towards KS in 17.5 cm.

Apart from the fact that I consider it unnecessary, the sand-lime brick is not a bad choice here either. 17.5 cm is more than enough. Plan bricks are generally glued in the bed joint instead of mortared, and omitting the head joint will soon be old hat. Do not underestimate the weight, the difference to aerated concrete is more significant here than with workability. Here we still have a thread on the topic of sports in the garage:
