Hello dear construction experts,
At the beginning of next year, I will take over a house built in 1906. Two granny flats/holiday apartments have been "tacked on" to this house.
Now my questions about the apartment in the attic.
I am not satisfied with the room layout/floor plan.
Does anyone have an idea how this could be designed more cleverly?
I can't think of anything...
1. I don’t like that you have to go up a really very steep staircase (more like stairs) and then immediately stand in front of the apartment door (there is no landing, unfortunately I have no photo of it).
For example, if you want to carry a suitcase upstairs, you first have to go up without the suitcase, open the door, go down again and carry the suitcase into the apartment.
Also, the staircase intrusion extends into the apartment. It extends further into the apartment than shown on the drawing.
You can see it clearly in the photo. On the left is the apartment entrance door, which leads directly down the steep stairs and straight ahead to the door to the living room.
How could this be solved more cleverly?
2. I do not like the current bathroom situation. There is no sink in the shower; instead, the sink is under the slope next to the bedroom.
I would like a complete bathroom. If the bathroom were extended to the right, there would be no window in the bedroom anymore. The shower is just tacked on there. Previously, I think there was only a toilet there. I could ask the building authority if I could install a window in the gable above the bed, but that is very complicated and possibly not allowed due to strict building regulations.
I once had a small attic holiday apartment on holiday, which was basically split in two. The bathroom was located off the hallway.
Maybe you could remove the apartment door and put the kitchen on the left (I don’t like the bathroom in my house because then you hear doors slamming etc. if someone has to get up at night. I like the kitchen there; usually people don’t go there at night. It would probably be more pleasant for the guests as well).
On the right then the apartment door... then you would have a staircase landing. The current kitchen could become the living room. That would be very small, of course, and I would still have no solution for the bathroom with that.
Who has a solution for the bathroom problem?
Maybe you are more creative than I am, that would be great.
Thanks already for your efforts.
Best regards and a happy Easter
