Children's rooms are so big because the space on the second floor was already available anyway. ...
Read this/your sentence carefully. As if living space costs nothing. Simply put, the room layout on the upper floor is oversized, while the living room in the basement apartment is a tiny hole. The room proportions don’t match. If I omitted the north arrow earlier in haste, I apologize, but I don’t think there was one. What does the plot look like? What I don’t understand: the ground floor has a large space requirement, so why make the upper floor even bigger, just so the terrace is covered? Leave it out, then light will come into the living room and bedroom, and the upper floor can have normal children's rooms with a small roof terrace with a smaller attic floor. Possibly a storage/utility room in the upper floor, then the basement apartment will also have an adequate size, and the in-laws won’t feel trapped :D A terrace roof can also be designed differently and more airy.
