Thank you very much for the many responses. It is quite stressful here at the moment, so I hardly find time to write. However, I am very happy that so many have replied.

We currently have a 2x1m table. Both comfortably seat 2 people each, and on the end side 1 person each. So absolutely sufficient for 6 people. 20cm more wouldn't hurt, but are not really necessary.

What do you do when you have visitors or how do you celebrate birthdays?
If a couple has 2 children and has a couple with 2 children as guests, you already need 8 chairs.

I hope it's okay if I don't open a separate thread just for this.

I keep breaking my head trying to figure out how to comfortably seat 8 people at the table because I think we don’t have much space for a big table.
In everyday life, maybe 6 chairs at the table are enough; when guests come, 2 more chairs should be comfortably placeable.
Can 3 people sit comfortably opposite each other at 240cm or is that too little? Then I would only put 2 more chairs at the head ends when we have guests.

Can you comfortably seat 8 people at a 2m or 2.20m table?

2m is just about okay. We currently have 2m and have already been eight people around it. Cozy is something else. You also inevitably start to puzzle with dishes, cutlery, glasses, food, etc.

I think it also depends on how you eat. If it's just about food on the plate (Russian style), then that's easy. But if the dishes are supposed to be in pots and pans on the table and everyone can help themselves, like it used to be, then it gets tight. And if it's Asian (or raclette), then it's no longer possible. I think that for such rather special occasions you can also work with side tables and serving carts.

I think it also depends on the chairs or table legs - I probably mentioned that before. With wide chairs or obstructive table legs, sometimes three people simply can't fit on one side. For us, three people just barely fit on a table that's just under 2 meters long. More is obviously more comfortable, especially when there are small salad bowls etc. for everyone on the table.
