We were back on our construction site for the first time today after our vacation. In the meantime, the inner window sills have been installed. We were shocked by the many cracks.... Of course, it is a natural product, but it really doesn’t look nice. Is that normal and something you just have to accept?

One more question. Our front door has already been installed, even though the interior plaster isn’t done yet. We have already discovered some initial scratches; the door was not covered at all to prevent damage. The interior work is only just starting now, and different trades are coming in and out. How was that handled with you, and who is liable for any possible damage?

Thanks for your opinions. We are currently a bit upset with the carpenter

So at first glance it does look like it's broken, can you actually feel these cracks? Or are they "only" in the material? To me it looks more like partially or completely broken window sills, which I would not accept like this (even though it's a natural product, but then only, for example, quartz veins would be normal).

However, I also wonder how sensible it was to install them already if the interior plaster is not in yet?!

Window sills in front of plaster are the normal procedure for me. And I would definitely complain about the cracks.

1. The cracks are not normal. This is a defect. 2. Normally, so-called construction doors are installed, which are then replaced shortly before handover. If the actual door is installed earlier, it is usually protected with cardboard and foil by the door manufacturer/installer. If this does not happen because of a low-cost home builder (it is a service after all), then do it yourself. 3. The plasterer covers all surfaces, e.g. window frames.

No. It is just as much a defect as a crack in a glass pane.

That is not normal either; there are construction doors for that. However, it depends on the scope of the construction services whether the additional effort is included. It is possible, but then with protective measures.

You can, but do not have to, install window sills and doors before the interior plaster/screed. Both are common practices and have advantages and disadvantages.

As always, the one who caused them. If the perpetrator cannot be identified, then in the worst case it becomes your own problem. How are you building? General contractor, architect, developer? That also influences who is responsible for the damages.

That's exactly the way it is. In our case, the windows with the window sills were installed in one day. There was neither interior nor exterior plaster yet. Now the exterior plaster is being finished, and this is how it looks. If you enlarge the picture, you can see that the windows and doors are taped off.
