Does anyone know where I can buy natural stone slabs in Berlin? There are sometimes large companies where you can buy "leftover stock". Looking for a granite countertop.

Hello Peter,

the Google search "Granit Restposten Berlin" brings up some interesting links, but can you cut/process granite yourself? The slabs might be touched up (2-4mm) and if the leftover piece doesn't happen to fit your kitchen exactly, then it has to be adjusted/cut ... especially if a stove and/or sink are to be installed.

Best regards

Thanks for the hint and the quick reply. I will do some more detailed research this evening... I have a buddy with his own workshop, hope he has the right tools... Regards Peter

Granite can be cut with a wet cutting machine, but for kitchen countertops, depending on the size and thickness, the weight quickly becomes too much to handle without a crane. It must also rest cleanly during cutting, otherwise you will immediately have breakage, so the machine must have an appropriate support surface. You can no longer manage this with a tile cutter unless you are a hardcore DIY tinkerer.

I would also spontaneously advise against granite countertops, that was my first idea during our kitchen planning as well. But just the installation (crane + at least 4 people) is so complicated that I quickly abandoned the idea. And thinking about the future: in 20 years you might want a different look in the kitchen and then you're faced with a 600 kg slab... -> it can only be removed in individual pieces and with a lot of work...

And we're not even talking about your case of "I'll just quickly grab a clearance item and cut the slab for myself"... :-)

Granite is really cool, I have it myself. Looks amazing, indestructible, low maintenance, you can cut directly on the surface ... the only disadvantage in my opinion is the weight. But we managed to get it in without a crane, although it was at the limit for 4 people. They were really out of breath. ;)

You can also get it out in one piece after 20 years if you want, but then you would have to find someone who wants the slab(s) with exactly the openings for the stove, sink, and drillings and exactly in that color with a few scratches, that person would practically have to plan their kitchen around the slabs ... the chance is zero. So you can also break them and "craft" something from the leftover pieces.

Although I rather assume that the kitchen will be shabby by then and you can bring the granite back to life with a polish.

But yes, quickly from the clearance sale it will hardly work.

Best regards
