You also have to consider that by doing this, you completely saved yourself the cost of a construction power connection from the utility company. Its installation and dismantling easily cost the 1,000€ which are now due. I would suggest paying him the money and he should park it in his account until the next annual statement. If this statement (to which he should of course grant you access) is again that high, then a repayment of, for example, 800€ could be agreed upon. Then you would have done something nice for his helpfulness with 200€. Has he perhaps acquired a waterbed or something similar? Maybe his high-voltage socket was temporarily "misused" by someone else?

I would agree if the arrangement was "Construction power through me. There is no crane or anything like that involved. So probably 300-500 kWh in total." So a flat concession from the neighbor. Then I would write it off as a lesson learned. But here it is such that there is a meter involved. This meter was even checked again. And this meter is simply conclusive. Additionally, the amount of consumption does not make sense on the construction site. But that is only an indication. In contrast, there is only the consumption from previous years of the neighbor. Those are also only indications and no proof. The only proof is the meter at the moment. Due to the circumstances, I would personally also pay first and then clarify the situation afterwards. You will certainly not only spoil things with him, but also with other neighbors... He has been living there for a long time. If he is indeed at fault, you are in a position to get the money back. He surely does not want to ruin his neighborhood either.

Have you checked if any part in the construction site power box might have been wired bypassing the meter? We also worked over the winter and used 1,500 kWh in 3 months. Most of it went to our electric heaters or the electric heaters of our companies.

Hello, how long was the cable, what cross-section did it have? And was it perhaps damaged? You get 3000 kWh over a period of 6-9 months (How long did this construction exist?) with a continuous load of no more than 500 watts combined. At 50 m cable length, that’s no more than 10 watts per meter. The cable won’t burn up, but the meter on the input side will spin properly. Or was the cable perhaps significantly too long and someone had the brilliant idea to roll up the excess length and store it as a coil? Then there was a coil that generated a lot of reactive power and consumed energy.... I’m no cable monkey but even as a mechanical engineer I know that there are several ways to waste a lot of electricity with a poor installation. Think about it the other way around: How likely is it that your neighbor “takes advantage” (even though he knows you have a construction site meter at the other end) and runs a fan heater with the window open during exactly your construction time, illuminates a cannabis plantation with UV lamps or watches movies on his projector day and night? That’s unlucky but be glad that you saved the money for connecting the construction power to the normal power distribution box for it. It comes out about the same. Regards, Andreas

An indication that his measurement is correct and that no nonsense was possibly operated via the construction power.
One might also think that 300 kWh is far too little. That could suggest that his meter was faulty or individual sockets in the construction power costs ran past the meter.

Yes, the one that measured the consumption of his household plus the construction power box. House meter - construction power meter = private enjoyment of the homeowner.

Well, let's not get carried away. The Greens are not in power yet -_- 20-30% more expensive, yes.

But the truth is, the OP saved themselves the construction power connection, which often costs several hundred euros.

Nevertheless, the perception remains that the neighbor had an exploding power consumption (broken appliances, heat pump, old freezer running amok, fan heater set up, ...) and thinks it's because of the construction site. He cannot prove it. The construction site can prove that it was not them. Clear-cut case. Maybe a compromise would be to give him 500€. As soon as the next annual statement is there and his consumption is back to normal, he gets the rest.

4800 kWh "normal consumption" for a single-family house (?) is not exactly low either. There must be a heat pump or instant water heater, maybe electric heating installed to reach such a level?

During my university days, I met someone who also had to pay over 1000€ extra because she had turned on a fan heater in the bathroom by timer. So it would be nice and warm in the morning. It's just a small box, what could possibly go wrong... some people really don't realize things like that!
