Question, do you want clear varnish or colored? If you want it clear, then sand and oil, don't varnish. That's much easier, good varnish oil from Epifanes.. Google it. Or you soak the wood with D1 from Owatrol until it takes no more. Let the last coat dry well, gives a silky shine. It's also easy. A real clear coat, however, is big cinema, though beautiful. Colored. Then not high gloss but matte. High gloss shows every flaw. Difficult. Matte easier. Buy a good long-oil alkyd resin varnish, no acrylic. Alkyds dry slower, flow better, don't harden as much, are more elastic and handle wood movement well. Thinned in the first run they penetrate deep into raw wood and grip super well there. Sto makes good window paints, Sikkens too. You can also use Brillux. And get yourself a decent paintbrush, it can well cost 7,-. Put some effort into it, go at the enemy. Karsten
