Can a layperson dare to handle the baseboards themselves?

We have it like that too. That way, miter cutting is eliminated and it always looks neat and tidy.

I had that in the old apartment; I always got stuck with the vacuum cleaner and the mop, and after a few weeks the [Lose] came off, I probably should have glued them better.

So that can be simply calculated based on the hourly wage. For me, there were 5 rooms plus a hallway. I needed 4 hours per room, which is 24 hours. A professional is twice as fast, so 12 hours. At a gross rate of 50 euros, you end up with about 600 euros in savings. Certainly not a fortune, but just barely profitable to do it yourself (own labor 25 net). However, a miter and crosscut saw is necessary.

I have had good experiences installing baseboards with a hot glue gun. Advantage: the glue adheres significantly faster when cooling compared to assembly adhesive.

Important: gluing only works well if the walls are reasonably flat; in old buildings, I would proceed differently.

Have a new build with quite wavy walls, sometimes a 0.5 cm gap. The advantage of the clips is that you can hold the strip against the wall and place a clip where the "gaps" are. Then it pulls the strip to the wall and the gap is almost no longer visible. With glue, I had the problem that the strips did not hold there, just as you wrote.

Exactly! You don’t factor in the costs or time for borrowing tools, transportation, preparation, cleaning up, disposal! For me, the effort wasn’t worth it for a few hundred euros. Besides, I have never seen nicely installed baseboards done by an amateur.
