Back then, my parents had a 9.75% loan
Exactly my loan back then in 1990. Repayment of 1% was common in my environment. A house was something special; for that, other things were not available. If it goes wrong, there is always a way out again.
I am by no means advocating megalomania or naivety, but for courage and clear awareness for oneself.
If you compare the situation of your parents (and mine) back then, you had to be much braver. Perhaps that is also why less flashy stuff was done in and around the house; an additional sensible circumstance, and the shoemaker stuck more to his own, real lasts.
Many things. Before, much was done by oneself, with dad, uncle, etc. Thus, the burden was much lower.
There is no ONE before. Certainly, people were generally more willing to perform and "make sacrifices" for their own home. But nearly all homeowners I know from back then were at the limit of what was financially possible.
In this case, for example, one could also take a look at what one really needs to be satisfied and let oneself be less influenced by current trends. That alone saves a lot of money!
I cannot speak for everyone back then, but it was like that in my environment, and building was significantly more burdensome. In retrospect, I sometimes also glorify things, but be sure that it was considerably harder. It is nice that it is better today, and I have my own comparison. Many dads and uncles were exhausted men, and if you helped there, you were helped there. Paying was no option due to lack of money, therefore a trade of labor and thus hardly any time for family, etc.
Just calculate once roughly on a beer coaster what it means when you pay almost 10% interest...
