In principle, the property allows for an extension. A second residential unit, why not. Maybe plan it in such a way that it can be rented out to third parties or swapped with the daughter.

What I understand is that the TE does not simply want a built-on cube.

2 rooms are hellishly small for 3 people. Home office is out of the question.

There seems to be a misunderstanding here, because it is precisely the intergenerational form of living that I absolutely welcome. My comments therefore related particularly to the points you mentioned, but which apparently were missing, namely "together" and "planning"; I had not read either of those. Furthermore, I did not see any real planning regarding the lovely idea of being able to adequately accommodate parents in the house at some point. That too should be "planned" as best as possible and indeed also "together" with the respective people involved. Exactly my opinion!!! That’s exactly how I understood it too, and I also found that with regard to the intention of possible later care of the parents it had so far not been appropriately considered.

With a budget of 400,000? Sell everything and rebuild wherever and however you like.

So when I look at the 3D design with the huge glass front and then see the pool on the satellite image (I assume that the blue area is a pool), the extension just needs a diving board and everyone would think it's an outdoor and indoor swimming pool. Could also be the mountain station of a cable car. ;)

In my opinion, it's understandable that your relationship with the architect is/was a bit strained. Was the architect still able to convince you of a design?

Hey, okay, it’s really time for an update. We had to let everything sink in first and then we joined the majority opinion. We are now remodeling it really nicely for ourselves and the youngest child is being prepared for release into the wild. A large guest room offers space for the transition period and possible relapses. Architecturally, we will now only change the garage, dormer, terrace, and of course the window lintels. The redesign will be completed in the next few weeks and then I would be happy to put details up for discussion :) Even though it was mentally difficult – the solution is definitely better and not as demanding financially. PS: In the end, the architect had to admit that his planning had exceeded the financial framework by more than 50%. There was no talk of fees anymore.

Are you planning the renovation with the same architect?

I think that's quite a tough situation. As a client, you should actually be able to rely on the architect to design the plan according to the budget and not let their creativity run wild while hoping that the builders are liquid enough and will eventually give in.

I think that’s great! I’m glad you found a good solution. The "release into the wild" won’t harm your youngest child ;) I voluntarily released myself into independence on my 18th birthday. It was tough at first but looking back a good decision. You learn to live with less and develop a sense for what things are truly essential. Some of my friends are still living in the "child’s room" in their late 20s, certainly not for financial reasons. But in conversations, you notice they have little idea what it means to manage your own household.

Looking forward to the new plans.

Regards
