Yes, the more linear a lift runs, the better. However, the lift also appreciates a lot of space at the entry and exit points. This is often the sticking point with the (single-flight) straight stairs here: that their running length just "fits" into the floor plan.

You can gladly tell that to the person standing in front of the staircase or to the one planning a staircase. They will give you a kick downwards [emoji23]

uhm you don’t have to be old for that
here in our apartment building we have a straight concrete staircase completely carpeted. First of all, I find floor plans with a staircase like that in the middle unattractive.
2. the steps are also very short for us
3. slippery on the edge because of the carpet
4. that’s exactly it: if I fall upstairs, I tumble all the way down without braking – ideally I would prefer a 180° landing staircase, unfortunately not possible in our new building.
You can also fall 2/3 down a 180° spiral, my mother managed that 30 years ago, back then we had marble (?) steps, the puppy had peed at the top and she slipped down barefoot, it’s a miracle she only got really bad bruises.
Well, it’s the feeling – and even after almost 2 years I still hold on to the railing when I run down this staircase fast...
