Hello everyone,

we are currently facing the question of how much window area is necessary/sensible in relation to the room size in the bedroom?

At the moment, for a room of 19.90 m² (full floor) we have planned one window facing south (2.01x1.32m) and one window above the bed (2.01x0.95m) facing east. We would like to omit the window above the bed. Will the lighting still be sufficient then?

Of the 19.90 m² room size, about 2 m² are occupied by a wardrobe (3.40x0.60m) -> so approximately 18 m² effectively need to be lit.

Do you think the south window (=2.66m²) alone is sufficient to light the bedroom?

Thanks for your assessment, Johannes

AFAIK 1/8 is mandatory, 1/4-1/3 is nice and bright, and more than 50% gets expensive/is excessive. In the bedroom, it depends on the use. Is it really just pure sleeping and "cuddle" space? Then 1/8 is probably enough. If half the morning is often spent there with breakfast and reading, I would rather go for 1/4-1/3... However, I would never plan bedroom (windows) facing south...

I recommend the 1/4+ rule. We have that here at home in most rooms and the feeling of life is really (for me) nicer than with the shooting-slit windows of the new buildings of our acquaintances...

I find windows or the light streaming in through them (and sometimes the view) more beautiful than walls/artificial light, which is why I would always and everywhere vote for as many windows as possible. You can always close a window or limit the view, but adding another window afterwards is more difficult. Are you sometimes sick and have to stay in bed for a few days? ("Necessary," since you used this term, in my opinion means no window in the bedroom if you have a ventilation system.) May I ask why you want to omit the additional window? Ultimately, it is not just about what is "necessary/useful," but about how you feel comfortable, and both few windows and many windows are perfectly fine.

Morning light in the bedroom is a really great thing, so I would not want to do without a window facing east, if possible. As for the "illumination" of the room, wide shallow windows, as planned on your east side, are actually significantly more effective than narrow tall windows. Especially if they are installed high up in the room and not at knee height.

Thank you for the answer. We have recently been giving some thought to the planning regarding Feng Shui. It is said that a window above the bed should be avoided. Therefore, the consideration was whether it is possible to do without the window as well.
