Hi,

my wife and I are just starting our project to build our own detached single-family house. The plot is already decided, now it's about the floor plan design.

I would like to model our ideas in a floor plan software in 3D, as this makes it easier to visualize things and gives a better impression than sketches on paper.

However, this is not about the final modeling, as an architect would do. Therefore, it is not the absolute professional tool that is sought, but rather one that allows simple rough modeling to brainstorm ideas.

Which software can you recommend here? Thanks for your recommendations!

I use home.by.me and am satisfied with it. The furniture in there is quite scary, but you can usually find something that at least fits in terms of dimensions.

Once you have your plan, just build the whole thing as a model with thin wood. I found that great, and for the kids it was like a dollhouse that they could already furnish for themselves. Better than any drawing.

I have also used Sweet Home 3D on the iPad. If the property is already allowed to be entered, you can also project a 1:1 model onto the property in AR with the right device and walk through it.

I recommend professional planning hardware: paper, pen, and ruler. Because:

... that is precisely the "danger": when you can "better (than functioning) imagine" the "3D" drawing, it is often an illusion because in "3D" even the biggest rubbish looks impressively professional and "semi-final". You need some willingness to learn to get the hang of the software, and in the crucial functions it fails: bottlenecks / head-bumping spots, too steep stairs, etc. do not turn the picture red nor give any warning signal. The creator of a "3D" house design usually becomes more and more in love with the supposedly finished result from hour to hour.

You will meet some people here who quickly reveal improvable spots in clumsy doodles. If you want to find mistakes, your critics need experience - not you. With "3D" drawings, you quickly reap admiration for your talents as an architect, whether that is true or not - but it simply looks dangerously "great". Look around here once and pay special attention to which questioners receive the loudest boos with their designs: you will find that they have one thing in common – the use of quick-look-good software.
