The problem with trying out/buying new beds/mattresses is that you can definitely have back pain for the first 2-3 weeks when getting up, until you have adjusted.

We decided on a box spring bed because the "old" mattresses and slatted frames were not that old yet but had sagged relatively quickly even though they were not cheap items. The alternative would have been to switch to a roll slatted frame and a cheap mattress and possibly just change them more often or try something new and hope it lasts longer.

A waterbed was not an option for us because our bedroom is cold, and then we would be heating the room with the waterbed heater. (Besides, we were unsure whether the cats would eventually manage to make a hole in it.)

For that price you can also get a decent waterbed. Waterbeds are not cheap (at least if they are not supposed to be hardware store quality).

I have already seen plenty of beds from various online retailers that are under 3500 euros. Also with pocket spring core and made of solid wood. With waterbeds, the maintenance effort and extra electricity costs bother me.

: What care effort? Clean the inside of the mattress 4 times a year/wipe it with care products and fill in a conditioner once a year? For that, having an almost mite-free bed is worth the "effort" to me. If you have ever seen what accumulates in terms of skin flakes and other things, you would be a bit disgusted by a normal mattress. You are, of course, right about the electricity costs. However, the heating is not on all the time, so the costs are manageable.

Box spring bed! There you have more alternatives and don’t have to be so "careful" with it.

Hello nordanney,

That’s why I don’t "make" the beds like mom showed me, but leave them open; I don’t want to build a cozy cave for the mites

We are also facing the decision of getting a new bed. I’m not sure if I can get used to the feeling of floating freely in a waterbed; on the other hand, my back would surely thank me. What I would really like to know in advance: I have two little balls of wool, an old diva and a rather young animal with a lot of nonsense in its furry head. Could I consider buying a waterbed or would you rather advise against it? I certainly won’t have my monsters’ claws pulled or have claw caps put on them.

Thanks + Greetings from the Rhineland
