When it rings, mine also records. I have consciously not set up motion detection, partly because of data protection and partly because it would probably record every time a car passes by. Of course, it could be activated on a timer during the night.

Purely technically, recording is ALWAYS done when motion detection is activated, otherwise no motion analysis would be possible.

The problem is that doorbells tend to almost always face away from the property or door, since visitors come from the street direction. How should one solve something like this? Not at all.

You can only do that by not activating motion detection on the doorbell and only recording from the side using a separate IP camera.

I'm lucky there. My front door is on the side and the camera is accordingly not facing the street. I also talk to it directly (in the system it's an IP POE Cam). I can even mask areas ;)
