Use of the utility room. Would you move the wall?

Hello everyone – this is about the wall between the laundry room upstairs (small room, currently 2.59 m x 2.94 m) and the long room (3.15 m x 5.58 m). We had actually thought of making the laundry room 3.15 m wide and accordingly leaving only 50 cm behind the door. This would also improve the length-to-width ratio of the long room a bit. Our planner has now drawn it that way. Cabinets and an ironing board are supposed to be in the laundry room – the long room is intended for multipurpose / sports use. Would you move the wall? I actually only see the advantage that you could place a row of wardrobes behind the door (which we don’t really want). Thanks for your opinion.

At 50cm you are already very limited in what you can place behind the door. If nothing is to be placed on the (seen from here) left wall, then I would move the door right into the corner. Otherwise, definitely more than 60cm so that you are not restricted by the wall in what you can put there.

Of course, if the pool table or the ping pong table doesn't fit into another room because of this, I would set the priorities differently ;)

I think it’s mainly about whether an ironing board and two rows of cabinets will fit in the utility room if it’s only 2.95 meters wide – and I have some concerns about the lighting of the long room. The room doesn’t have a skylight.

Ah, now I understand, I had thought the other way around. So my ironing board is (estimated from a distance) not 1.5m long. You can definitely fit an ironing board in. With 2.90, minus 2x60, there is still 1.70 left. Ok, then you can’t simultaneously open doors next to the ironing board.

I think the almost 6 meters can get quite dark, I would actually install a skylight there. However, if I were to furnish, I would most likely place something along the back wall so the room doesn’t seem so long, unless I want to use the full length. Otherwise, I would say about the room: either put the door all the way against the wall, or leave enough space. The location of the window and the sloping roof also argue for leaving space. Except for the wall behind the door, you don’t have a wall where you can put (deep) furniture. And who knows what you might want or need to do with the room in the next X0 years.

You convinced us - let's leave it like that :D Although we will forgo the roof window - that is exactly south-facing.

How well do external shading/blinds for roof windows actually work in practice (only if it ends up becoming a children's room after all ;))?
