Hello.

We are planning to cover our 9 x 4 meter terrace with a glass-aluminum construction. Due to our special situation with the very tall windows, we only have the option to attach the terrace roof to the house at the height of the window crossbeams at 2.30 meters. With a standard terrace roof with a 5° slope, the garden-side clearance height would then be only about 1.90 meters. That seems too low to us, which is why we have considered covering the terrace with a gable roof. According to my research, this is done quite rarely. Do you have experience with a glass roof in the form of a gable roof or other ideas on how to cover it in our situation?

Attached are two pictures to illustrate the situation.

Thank you very much and best regards,
Fabian

Does the roof have to end at the wall? I would have made the terrace a bit bigger and placed an aluminum pavilion / pergola on it. Detached from the wall:

For me, instinctively, the recessed platform would be the right height for the canopy anyway.. so above the lamps. I don’t see what could be the problem..

I find the solution from Benutzer200 ideal. That's how I would do it too. Terraces attached to the house like that always look so out of place .... it doesn't fit here at all with the tall windows. I would find high-quality sunshades (or a sun sail) nicer.

Maybe I wouldn’t cover the entire area after all. A solid roof has the advantage over an umbrella/sail that dew doesn’t settle on the table, cushions, etc. in the evening and night.
If the terrace weren’t finished yet, I would also have thought about building it 2 meters or so from the house and having a narrow, covered access to it. We will have at least a similar structure on the house, so also with relatively large windows there, and we are still debating whether to have glass or a normal flat roof. The tendency, however, is towards a "dark roof" because otherwise you would have to add shading again; furthermore, there might possibly be additional photovoltaic elements on it.
, for example, implemented this nicely and there are also pictures of it.
But I can well imagine your "problem." We will also visually separate the roofing a bit from the house, so it will be freestanding and we think it will look lighter that way.
I could also imagine that, for example, above the kitchen exit there is a fixed glass roof with the "normal height" over the lamps, so maybe 3x4m, and next to it the sun terrace with a sail, umbrella, or other lighter, protective shading. For a similar reason, we reduced or split our terrace. One part is roofed, the other, higher up, remains open.
I think you have to be careful not to have a huge beam standing there permanently. In general, I also don’t think a terrace should be completely covered with a fixed roof.
– nice house by the way!

Apart from the fact that I would also rather "roof over" only 2 out of 3 windows, and I can't technically imagine the gable roof now, I would quietly say that the whole facade effect is ruined by a break. And when I look at gable roofs like that, and aside from still having no clue what you mean, I would painfully perceive a gable roof as a double stylistic break. I would imagine something like suggests in that front part where there is still grass and no window, and just let it have an effect. Compare also on the terrace. But beware: these things can fly and warp when strong wind comes up. For longer periods they should be anchored… I speak from experience :)
