Now stop with the victim blaming! Oral contracts are just as valid and binding as written ones — only their existence is unfortunately provable in very few cases. In this respect, TE obviously has the short end of the stick now, but nevertheless, the GU is a jerk and TE has every right in the world to vent and feel betrayed (because he is!). The advice to think solution-oriented is of course still good. The situation is what it is now and does not change by complaining.

But this isn’t about oral contracts, is it?! As I understand it, the general contractor is babbling something about "doesn't cost the world," which then turns out to be a lump sum of money that the OP simply didn’t calculate. And yes: it is very annoying that today morality is an alien word. But the "today" started a long time ago. As a buyer, you don’t have to believe everything that is said: this applies to yogurt with cultures (healthier than ever) as well as to the car (best car 2019) and of course to house building (costs not worth mentioning). That in the last case, the builder refers to the house, the client thinks it also refers to the land, we know by now.

In court, it is like on the high seas... if you catch someone who wants everything in writing, you go under.

Exactly.. It's not about contracts. The fact that everyone concludes verbal contracts daily has ZERO to do with the current situation. The OP can sue in civil court. It's open to everyone. You can also be upset that the GC sugarcoated the costs. And you can cry, cut yourself, not pay bills, etc. etc. But it doesn't get you anywhere. So why talk about spilled milk?

But it is about "I ensure that civil engineer XY carries out the work at price Z." This is at least something similar to an offer. No one claims that you can sue for anything now, but I don't understand why people still have to beat someone with the "everyone knows that" club when someone is feeling or actually down.
