No, well, lack of space certainly was not the motivation here. But as I said, we like it this way.

I know dozens of staircases at relatives', friends', and distant acquaintances' places after moving: I do not know this final step at all.

The last example is very chic. The cladding is of course better here than on a cantilevered staircase.

By the way, in our rental apartment we have a marble staircase, cantilevered from doubled and custom-made countertops, polished stainless steel railing, certainly easily five figures. Terribly decadent, but the original owner before our landlords was a savings bank director...

Even this high-end joiner doesn't have such a landing step. And honestly: the transition from marble to maple parquet would also look strange.

No; it was planned that way from the start. The alternatives would be a larger stairwell or a steeper staircase.

Neither of which are high on the priority list.

So far, no one has thought that something is missing at that spot. I’ve paid attention this week with two friends; they have it the same way.

I don't like it. But I think you can live with it. It's just missing the "final level". I've never seen it like this before either. Maybe I don't like it because I'm not used to it. That's just how we humans are.

Since I mainly have experience with old buildings and wood plays a big role in our area, I can only speak for wooden staircases in traditional construction. I have always considered the starting and ending steps as normal components. It must be due to the monument. I'll show you the picture from the 1979 textbook. But certainly, steel builders have completely different possibilities than carpenters. Best regards, Gabriele
