Hello dear ones,

The interior plaster has been in for 4 weeks, and since Thursday, the screed has finally been laid in the house. Now my neighbors who are building with us were airing out and said that the attic is still very damp. Unfortunately, all the windows were closed when it was laid, and it is extremely hot, so it cannot be entered now. She ventilated the other two floors by shock airing. We will wait one more day.

Now the painter wants to come next week and prime the walls, etc. But I don’t want that yet. I want to ventilate thoroughly first and let the screed dry. But I wanted to ask you, do we actually have to wait? We are applying primer on the plaster and then spray paint directly.

What else do I have to consider regarding screed, and when can it be covered? What can be done in parallel when the screed is already load-bearing?

Best regards

Thanks!!

1. What kind of screed? 2. New screed = ventilate several times a day (starting from the third/fourth day) 3. Painter next week for the primer is no problem (3b. Is the wall already Q4 for the paint? Otherwise it might look sh... in doubt) (3c. Or is painter’s fleece going on? You might eventually get shrinkage cracks everywhere. Not a must, but very likely.) 4. Screed gets functional heating 5. Screed gets covering heating ==> there are protocols from the screed layer for both on how to proceed 6. Perform CM measurement to know that the screed is ready for covering 7. From next week on you can do all sorts of things on the screed without any problems. It will definitely be load-bearing then – so electrical work or similar can be carried out.

What does very damp mean? With fresh screed, 80% and above is completely normal. Especially when heating starts and water is pushed out of every pore. Usually, the base coat plaster is applied shortly before, which also brings a lot of moisture into the house.

The windows were closed during installation because fresh screed shouldn’t get any drafts in the first few days. Some even go so far as to recommend only opening the windows on one side to completely avoid drafts, even after weeks.

If the painter is keen on working in a dripstone cave, let him do it. He will probably leave the windows open all day, so you save yourself the constant trips to ventilate.

Q4? Whoever has the money... sanding Q2 and filling in the rough spots is enough. At the latest when moving in, someone will bang something against the wall anyway and Q4 will be gone.

The demands are really getting more and more absurd.

That's why the question about the quality and the further procedure. After a week, the air is okay. It only gets interesting again during functional heating. And then the question is what kind of screed is inside. If they start with it next week (because of gypsum fiber screed or accelerators in cement screed), the painter will definitely find a dripstone cave. Then he will turn around on his own and postpone his work to another time.

And then there are my screed layers, who just tilted the windows to create a cross breeze ;)
