Hello everyone,

since we actually insisted on installing a satellite system in the new single-family house until the last moment, we are currently considering possibly watching TV via IPTV (online TV) in the new house.

I would be interested to know what is usually installed in new buildings nowadays, or through which connection TV is generally watched these days?

Does IPTV even make sense? I have heard from several sources that the price-performance ratio here is really good.
For example, signing a €6 contract with Waipu and watching online TV.

The installation of our satellite system + materials costs us €840. In about 10-15 years, such a satellite system would probably have paid off, but I wonder if the future is not online TV?
Cable, of course, has very high monthly running costs (which a satellite dish does not have), so that is actually ruled out for us at the moment.

However, I am still unsure about the terms "IPTV" and "online TV"... Do I necessarily need such an "IPTV receiver" or can I simply make a contract with one of the numerous online providers and then watch TV via an app?

We have very good broadband infrastructure in the new development area with fiber optics, so the DSL connection should not be a problem.

Has anyone already dealt with this topic in their new building and can share experiences/tips here? :)

We have, for example, a cable connection. There is coaxial wiring throughout the house that is currently not in use. However, we only use the connection for the internet. So it’s quite cheap. It is also the only option for fast internet here. (Telekom we have installed as well and an empty conduit for fiber optic.) TVs run via Zattoo. This works either directly over the Smart TV or, in our case, through Apple TVs. Zattoo (is cheaper than cable TV and the channels are in HD. Additionally, it works Europe-wide on mobile devices.) You only need an additional receiver for Magenta TV and the like. With Zattoo, the most expensive subscription (cancelable monthly) costs €13.99. With that, you can stream on four devices simultaneously. What kind of internet connection do you have? With slow download speeds, problems can arise if multiple people are streaming. Cable usually has higher download speeds. Be sure to install enough landlines. There is already a long thread here in the forum regarding Sat, IPTV...

How does it work then with Zattoo? Turn on TV – open app on smart TV and go? I could imagine that the “start” might be relatively annoying – but I could be wrong since I currently have 0.0 experience with it. I had looked into the subscriptions once. I must say, I actually find it quite nice price-wise.

The internet connection should be very, very good according to the new broadband expansion and fiber optic in the new development area. Apparently up to 1,000 mbits :D

Yes exactly, open the app on the Smart TV and watch. Nowadays, with most TVs you can define what should open on startup. We just use Apple TVs as the central unit. It goes directly to the right input via voice command..

It all depends on your TV habits. I know some people who haven't watched linear TV for a long time and that number is growing. About 2-3 years ago, I would have said satellite, but currently, it would be on the chopping block. Adequate network cabling is more important to me today than satellite.

I keep reading that too – but I don’t understand why it depends on TV habits?

We definitely still watch linear TV – so streaming only via Netflix & Co. is not an option for us. However, I can watch linear TV via Internet TV just the same. So basically, I don’t have a disadvantage compared to SAT, do I?
