Hi Jasmin, thank you very much for your question. No, unfortunately the bamboo needs a rhizome barrier and this should preferably remain as it is.
Best regards
Just make the terrace a little smaller, or move the edging stones a bit inward. Then you will have space for back support towards the bamboo. The gap can be filled with soil afterwards. If the substructure is still good (possibly do a small test excavation), I see no problem with simply piling up and leveling the gravel.
For a terrace, I now see less of a problem if, instead of the usual 3-5cm of gravel at the end, there are sometimes 7 or 8cm. After all, no particularly heavy loads are to be expected.
Many thanks for your responses and ! That already helps a lot! I also think the idea of making the terrace a bit shorter is very good.
Do you have any idea if there is something to support the bamboo rhizome barrier while I dig there? To make sure it doesn’t collapse? Or are there any other tricks? Since once it’s removed, I probably won’t be able to push it back in again.
I imagine something that can be clamped in between and somehow screwed open with a thread or something ... and then I do the back support piece by piece and let it set, then comes the rest (or something like that)?
What kind of rhizome barrier is that? We also have bamboo in a barrier, but it is a 2 mm thick "foil," and everything inside is root-bound. Nothing would change if you dug up one of the four sides. If you are worried, drive a few sturdy metal rods (reinforcing steel) into the ground beforehand to hold it.

Exactly, it is a 2 mm thick "foil". The bamboo was planted in it 4 years ago. That could of course be the case that nothing happens. But the idea with the steel rods is great! That's how I will try it. Thank you so much, you have helped me a lot!
