I have found many negative reviews on the internet
That they supposedly only care about the commission and making money and not acting in the interest of the insured

I am just wondering what I should do: find insurance on my own or insure through the Bundeswehr??
What would be the best approach from your point of view?

Millions of people insure themselves directly. Some through the Bundeswehr. There are negative experiences with everything. On the internet, only those write who have had problems.
Do whatever gives you the best feeling.

Since 2001 IIRC. One claim, yes, with the liability insurance. But directly with the insurer, I did not have to involve the BDV. However, in 2002 they took over legal advice to get out of a KLV... they would have liked to push it to a test case; the company (MLP life insurance) eventually gave in.

They never receive commissions. It is an eV, which is not allowed to generate any permanent profits. They only generate income from membership fees and the 8 euro administrative fee per insurance. Plus from daily rentals of parts of the office and certainly some subsidies from the federal government, states, or similar.

If you have concerns, just go to a broker who can offer as many companies as possible. But under no circumstances would I choose an exclusive insurance agent.

Option 2 find and take out insurance yourself, e.g. via Checkx4

I read somewhere that although the Bund is an eV, it still has a GmbH through which the income runs (can't find it quickly right now)

Yes, I know there are negative experiences with almost everything.
And yes, the majority do not insure through the Bund but choose their insurance themselves.

The group insurances run through this GmbH. For legal reasons. The ADAC also sells its insurances through an independent GmbH whose shareholder in turn is 100% the ADAC eV. Per se nothing suspicious!

Check24 I would avoid, insurances have to pay to be listed there at all. If anything, I would visit a widely diversified multi-insurance broker on site.

I don't think you will find that. Ten times an insurance pays, then not for you, or it causes trouble, or only part, or or or...

With Chk24 you can always compare 3 insurances and also see where the differences are. Whether this or that is important to you, or if you can do without it. With a multi-insurance broker in the end you don't even know how neutral the advice is or if they steer you to where they get the most for. ‍♂️
