At least in our area, the gable height, angle, etc. are often strictly regulated ;)

Right, a slightly higher knee wall and you have plenty of space that can only be used by bending, where it is cold in winter and unbearably hot in summer! Where you can dry laundry and send children to play and where you can easily and quickly climb up if you ever run out of baking ingredients or something else!

But jokes aside... so far I've only met people who couldn't afford the basement, but none who consciously opted out of it. It is and remains a matter of the wallet!

I don't know what kind of roofs you are familiar with. Our attic has just under one meter knee wall height, a maximum room height of 3m, is rammed and has underfloor heating. Furthermore, it doesn't bother our stuff to be there. For laundry etc., there is a utility room. It's also not a money issue – it was sufficient even for 300sqm of floor area – but it was a very deliberate decision.

P.S. It must of course be insulated!
Oh, and if you notice when moving that you still have boxes from the last move, you realize how unnecessary the basement actually is ☺

Guys, we don’t need to argue here about whether a basement makes sense or not. I also believe that many (not all!) skip the basement because of the budget. But there are certainly those who consciously choose to do without a basement.

The fact is, a basement is expensive. So if money is tight, you really have to calculate carefully and look for alternatives.

Me, for example, although you can combine such trips :-) ! Except, of course, bicycles and garden equipment, which probably stand in the house for very few people, whether there is a basement or not.

I don’t know why you see a dispute in this discussion.

Yep! Us :) How could it be otherwise ;)
We had a beautiful house – unfortunately with a basement. But no storage space for, for example, cleaning supplies on the ground floor. The vacuum cleaner was standing somewhere around, tools, spare light bulbs and batteries were in the dresser in the dining area :(
Since my husband packed the boxes in the basement for the move (I packed upstairs), now all the junk is in the garage. All of that could have been gotten rid of before the move. So: I would have liked to get rid of it... but that will be done now ;)

Now I go one door further to the utility room – I take this short path dozens of times daily when it’s a busy day.
And once you have it (because of a sports injury or being over 40) in your knees, you appreciate it because of the missing stairs :D
