As often as I agree with you, this is not the case here :-) If I build 60 sqm of above-ground sealed storage space, I'll definitely pay more than €50,000 for it. At this point, one can again have the discussion about whether you really need all the things you store there. I know that we will have problems living in a house without a basement and that we won't start throwing things away overnight :-) Bicycles and garden items really shouldn’t go in there anyway. So I can very well understand that people want a lot of storage space, which is cheapest in the basement against this background. Storage rooms in houses without basements:

Right! My husband, as a true Bavarian advocate of a cellar, eventually admitted, considering the costs, that we don’t need a cellar. We have a (crawl) attic that serves for decorative stuff and skis, in a week we will receive our garden shed of almost 10 sqm. Additionally, we have our utility room, which is 12 sqm and holds tools and the like.

Yep, I find it pretty crazy to finance €45,000 to €50,000 just to have storage space for "everything else" ;)

Exactly, just imagine if instead the house was planned 60sqm larger and you spent €100,000 on it. Then the basement definitely makes more sense.

: It’s not about planning the house 60 sqm larger – it’s about paying €200 per month for space that, in my opinion and objectively, you don’t need. Of course, you need storage space! And not too little! But it should be reasonably planned where you really need it. If you have to count every thousand anyway, then 15-20 sqm distributed over 2 levels in the house should be sufficient, plus possibly a garage and garden shed. (Double garages seem to be standard nowadays – at least in planning or on wishlists.) Who is willing to use the stairs for every tool or toy, bicycle and garden equipment, cleaning stuff or laundry? For example, the kids’ vehicle fleet will definitely not end up in the basement ;) Besides, natural storage space occurs under the roof, very cost-effectively, as also writes.

I’m not writing this to persuade anyone, but to make them think about whether they really need the expensive space.

Regards, Yvonne

Correct, raise the knee wall a bit and you get a lot of (almost free) storage space. Almost every house needs a roof/attic (except flat roofs).
We even have to do without a garage and therefore built a garden house of about 16 sqm (approx. €2,000).
The house was not planned differently for that reason, enlarging the attic was not worth mentioning in terms of price. Therefore, we really saved several ten thousand euros :)
