I wouldn’t put up with the cherry laurel. It is neither ecologically sensible nor easy to care for and attractive (the latter two if you want to keep it under control). I would rather consider Ilex.

I also find the question very interesting, also considering the option of "planting something" that provides privacy. My mom + mother-in-law have already specially "cultivated" boxwood hedge for us so that we can use it later if we want. However, I prefer something that blooms. I was thinking of a lilac hedge. Does anyone have experience with that?

I find everything monotonous terrible. If you have even a little bit of fun with gardening, you really shouldn't put yourself through it. Mixed hedges are much nicer - and once a year, if necessary, you can also afford a gardener to cut it into shape sensibly. [Kirschloorbeer] is creepy and, as already said, unecological. I personally only know people who regretted planting an entire hedge with that stuff. If you look at the classifieds sometimes, there are plenty for free in exchange for digging them up yourself. Which, by the way, is also no fun; that stuff is very stubborn.

forgotten: Lilac is great when it gets enough sun. But also combined with other stuff and it needs space, it can grow into a tree if you let it.
