Planning of the network cabinet and its contents

Hello,

I am currently planning our network cabinet. How big should it be? What do you have? 6U or better 12U? Or smaller or even bigger?

The following should go in:

- 24-port patch panel
- 24-port switch
- power strip
- 2 network hard drives
- router
- 2 shelves
- Fibaro Home Center 2

Did I forget anything that absolutely needs to go in? I also imagine it to be incredibly fiddly when I have to connect the 20 network cables to the patch panel while the cabinet is already mounted on the wall....

How did you do it?

I have a 15 HE cabinet. Inside are a power strip, Sat multiswitch, 24-port switch, 24-port patch panel, 2x POE injectors because there is no POE switch yet, Fritzbox, UM router.

Putting the cables on actually went quite well.

How did you then manage the patch panel wiring? Did you leave enough cables hanging out of the cabinet and then store the cables behind the patch panel?

Reserve 2 more HE for a small UPS. Cables are usually left 1m longer than the final position in the cabinet, so they can be comfortably laid on the patch panel and finally screwed in. The cables then disappear at the back of the rack.

I don't need a UPS in the network cabinet, the function is seamlessly taken over by my E3/DC storage unit in case of emergency....is there anything else that often gets forgotten? Thanks for the tip with 1m....

A small UPS? For what.. my patch panel is hanging above the fuse box, on the same one sits the Speedbox .. next to it the electricians installed me a double socket. I think it looks like this for 95% of all home builders too
