You are only allowed to have one wall (garage, etc.) at the border with a maximum length of 9 meters.

Behind the garage (6m length) I still have 4-5 meters of space. I can't really do much with that space either.

Can I then attach a carport behind the garage with a length of 4 meters? With the 6m garage, I would then be at 10 meters.

My actual question: Does the carport also count as "wall area"? Actually not, right? It doesn't have a "wall".

This is called boundary construction and "has not much to do with walls". A carport is also a boundary construction!

So with us it's called border development. And here it doesn't matter whether it's a garden house, a garage, or a carport. Even the roof of a carport takes the sun away from your neighbor. But with us it's less strict, we are allowed up to 12 m :)

We have also decided on a 4 m wide carport with an approximately 2 m deep storage "shed". We will then install a partition wall/palisade wall or similar on the north side (not reaching all the way up to the roof). This way, the carport provides weather-protected storage space where usually ice on the car windows should not occur. If you absolutely want a garage, however, the first suggestion would be worth considering: a simple garden house.

Oh, I see - if you need an edit, it’s not there:
Even with us, a boundary construction up to a maximum of 11.99 m is allowed.

Hello Uwe,

The carport also counts as boundary construction, and if you exceed the 9m at one boundary, you usually have to secure the rest by a legal encumbrance (Baulast) on the neighbor’s property.

Additionally, the extension is also boundary-adjacent, even though it is not exactly on the boundary, meaning overall you are then at 13m of boundary construction. As long as you don’t have or plan any further boundary construction, that is still possible.

A smart move would be to build the garage directly at the rear boundary in a size of 9 x 3 m, then you wouldn’t need a Baulast, you would have 12m of boundary construction, and no dead space behind the garage.

Best regards
