A house built with a timber frame construction is actually like an internal half-timbered structure. From the outside it is coated with plaster, so it does not look like wood and does not need to be maintained any more or less than a solid house. Inside, it can theoretically also be plastered, making it indistinguishable from a house made of stone.

A wooden house – I agree with you on that – must be regularly protected from moisture etc. from the outside. Although friends of ours have a 15-year guarantee on the wood of the exterior walls and should only then take up paint and brush.

Hello, I think the topic of cuboids/cubes is settled. The envelope area naturally includes the roof and the floor. The most cost-effective design for the house/passive house is the cube, both energetically and in terms of construction costs, namely with a flat roof. Does the plot even allow for such a large area for the bungalow? Floor area ratio!!!!! Good old brick, what is marketed under the term brick today has little to do with the good old one. You really have to build with perforated bricks. Of course, then with the appropriate external thermal insulation. But please no usual ETICS made of EPS. The incident in Hamburg two days ago will hopefully lead to a rethink. With a timber construction, you achieve your passive house much better than with any other building material. Timber construction says nothing at all about maintenance. What you put on the outside is entirely up to you. That can also be plaster, clinker bricks, facade panels, and so on. Even with wood, you can dispense with maintenance. A natural boarding made of resistant wood is also possible. Well, of course, you then have to like the natural greying of wood. Regards, Friedrich.

First of all, thank you very much for all the answers!

We really need to revise or rethink the square and the cube!!!

I am not a fan of flat roofs, even if they may be cheaper in terms of acquisition costs!

The plot is definitely big enough for a square, so we definitely wanted everything on one level and also in the described size (15.5 x 11M).

I had to google a lot first to decipher all the abbreviations.

I'll start with the breakdown now and next to it my questions. Hochlochziegel are the good old bricks (at least they look like that)?
VWS with EPS = full thermal insulation with EPS rigid foam boards. Which incident in Hamburg and why are these unsuitable or what would be more appropriate?

Regarding the timber construction: My grandmother has built a total of 3 houses with bricks that have stood for decades without any problems, but once a wooden balcony, and the work we always have with the wooden balcony is just the worst.
Therefore, I want to learn from my grandmother's experiences and actually avoid wood.

As a layman, I also don't understand the sense of a wooden frame that I then cover with plaster, clinker, facade panels, and so on, because the wood always moves and if I then put something over it and the wood underneath moves, it will eventually crack and I have to repair it again.

I don't have that problem with bricks, do I?

Thank you again for the previous (and future) answers!

Hello,

Maybe you should explain what you understand by a passive house (PH)? In a real PH, no heating system may be installed. And – important for cost estimation – where do you and your girlfriend want to build?

Rhineland greetings

By passive house we understand an airtight house with a heat pump (i.e. comfort ventilation with heat recovery), triple-glazed windows, whereby heating is replaced by air circulation. The costs of the heat pump and other energy sources are to be offset by solar power.

We will build and live in Hungary/on the border (since my girlfriend is from Hungary).
