Addendum: We only have SAT centrally directly at the dish (Multi-LNB?). From there, the cables go directly to the consumer, there is no SAT access in the utility room/meter room. However, we only have "just" 4 SAT connections.

LNB supports up to a max. of 8 connections; above that, you need the multiswitch. Practically, LNB = router and multiswitch = switch.

Now, after your explanations, I know what is meant. Thanks! I'd rather build a cabinet for the network myself.

I do the same. I include the space requirements in the planning, and of course the network cables have to terminate there. That means the network cabinet is later just as immovable as a meter cabinet or a heating circuit distributor.

Practically, it went like this for us: I provided the cabinet and patch panel, the electrician installed both (attached the cabinet to the wall) and terminated the cables. Everything else was done by myself afterwards.

Next to the meter cabinet, I still have 2 meters of "free wall," where the cables can then end bundled. I will take care of the rest afterwards.

After your explanation, however, I also consider a patch panel unnecessary; I can connect directly with the ends of the "long cables" into the switch instead of creating a "female end" through the panel and then making connections between the patch panel and switch with many short cables – or am I mistaken?

Yes, you have a misconception. The installation cables are rigid and relatively difficult to feed into the distributions, etc. Let alone crimping the necessary connectors onto them, which you ultimately need anyway, because the switch only has sockets.

The path of least resistance and also the most cost-effective is:

Installation cable ---> Patch panel ---> Switch

Our electrician reported that for small installations with maybe five network cables, he crimps connectors onto the ends of the installation cables. Then the patch panel is omitted. But, see mycraft, 18 LAN installation cables already form a pretty thick rigid bundle. It is highly recommended to create a clear handover station with the help of a patch panel.
