Is this a concrete carport? Or wood/aluminum?

He was only concerned about the price; we will probably incur costs of around 30-35k Euro for this small gimmick.

Well, honestly: that looks really awful if the entire front yard is supposed to be a carport. I don’t understand the whole planning there. You also want to have light or encounter daylight when stepping out of the house and not only on the terrace side, right?! You use the entrance area more throughout the year than the garden. And I always say: losing a meter at the back you don’t notice. But if it’s missing at the front, it’s too late and makes you unhappy every day. Also, having a window under the carport would be possible but just an emergency solution. No matter how dark the apartment may be – people need light! And you want to reach the front door. Guests too... between cars not really doable. Since the door can’t be seen either, the granny flat is considered your entrance. But that’s all off topic.

30-35k just for the look of the carport? Phew...

I do agree with you. It’s far from beautiful but the size and dimensions of the plot don’t allow for much more. I don’t find it perfect either. Leaving a car outside is also a lousy solution you’ll always be annoyed about. Also, it’s annoying that our front door is so hidden. But I think if you want to have it that way, you explain it the first time and you don’t want “fundraisers” there.

A carport can only be next to or in front of the house. And if it’s in front of the house, there’s not really any space left in the back.

The granny flat has many windows facing south. In the living room/kitchen, light is very important. But you only spend time in the bedroom at night, and bathrooms are often interior rooms without windows or with frosted glass.

Your 20 x 30 plot with the southern side would offer completely different possibilities. It would be possible here to place a double carport on the north side. The simplest option would be to move the main house 3 meters to the south. The west terrace and garden would then also be in the southern sun. No loss of plot, gain of space in the yard. So only advantages, provided the floor plan is not known. But that would also be possible to plan.
You know that we offer suggestions with advice and support here... before the building application is submitted.

It is indeed a lousy solution, but doable, common, and something that doesn't negatively affect life (except for the few scratches per year)

Modesty has nothing to do with stupid when you consider how many cars get by without a roof

... and what you could buy for the house or garden with the money saved. Would immediately trade the expensive carport or garage for a nice pool in the garden...
