Of course, it also depends on how remote the house is. If in a residential area a loud alarm system and five 500-watt halogen floodlights go off, that, in my opinion, deters more than simply taking a little longer to get into the house unnoticed. A combination of both is probably the best. I think even the best windows don’t help if you can tinker with them unnoticed for an hour, and having no camera doesn’t help either if you can get in and out in 2 seconds...

The police advisory centers generally recommend genuine RC2 windows (not RC2N) for new constructions. If you want to save money on the first floor, it is important that no ladders or similar climbing aids are lying around in the garden or at the neighbor’s place. As an example, a real case was mentioned where the homeowner had actually done everything correctly and the ground floor was well secured. But his ladder was left unsecured in the carport, and with its help, a window on the first floor was broken open. Mechanical security should always be given priority; electronic aids are rather an additional measure. For example, lighting deters opportunistic offenders cost-effectively. Professionals are hardly stopped by alarm systems.

Ok, maybe it also depends a lot on the environment, but if a siren went off on my house and everything became as bright as day, then even at 3 a.m., some neighbors would be at the window and would also call the police and write down numbers etc.
A colleague, on the other hand, lives in the middle of the forest, the next house is 2 km away. If he is on vacation and someone wants to break in, it doesn’t matter which windows he has, since the intruder can roam unnoticed as long as they want.
Here, cameras that send a notification would help more, then at least you could call the police immediately yourself and also have evidential photos right away.
As I said, it always depends on the circumstances...

Hello Frank,

I cannot confirm that; I often meet police officers at trade fairs who have their advisory booths on site. It always depends on the environment in which the building is constructed.

Basically, it is important to equip the windows on the ground floor and those that can be quickly accessed via the garage/carport with more mushroom cams and drilling protection. It is not so easy to break through triple glazing and is therefore seldom used as the method of choice.

Also to consider: if certified RC II is installed, the overall U-value of the window deteriorates.

Rhineland regards

OK, I referred this here to the specific case. Whether the advice is always the same, I of course do not know, you surely have had more contacts. True. That breaking windows is rather rare was also told to me. To my knowledge that was not mentioned at all, but good to know. Thanks for the info.

There are (nonetheless) RC2 windows that are suitable for passive houses. It is often simply a matter of money ...
