You definitely can't say that as a general rule!
I've got two kids jumping around at home, then I want to see how anyone is supposed to sensibly do home office on a long term basis. Especially when you have lots of calls and also video calls with clients.

Also this here:

You can't just throw that out as a general statement. I can't have a video call with clients from bed or look at my plans...

People, don’t always assume things from your own perspective, there are other people with different needs who think differently. I keep noticing this in this forum.

So I somehow manage to work from home. So again for comparison: A house with 130 sqm including all costs and also outdoor facilities would be close to 500,000 without a garage or basement but with land. Let’s assume I get 250,000 euros for our current 112 sqm house with basement, garage and established garden, then the new house would cost me twice as much in the end, right? I would have a new house, but only 130 sqm without a basement or other storage options. That means I would hardly have gained anything for so much money, correct? And if I want, say, 140 sqm with a garage, I would rather end up over 500,000 euros including outdoor facilities and all costs, correct? Because if that is the case, I think I would clearly answer no to the question of whether it is worth it for me to give up financial independence from 35 and only regain it at retirement.

Yes, your explanations are basically correct. The house probably isn't in such a good location. For us, the price difference between the old building and the new building would hardly exist. However, you have almost no chance of getting a building plot for a new house.

I would also try to arrange with the house and, if necessary, outsource the [HO-Platz] or maybe do a small renovation somewhere. You can talk to an architect about that.

But where I would be careful. Having the house paid off is not the same as financial independence.
Those are two different things. You still have to get money from somewhere for living, for the children, for repairs, etc. But life is easier if you are debt-free, that's true.

I meant more independent - basically 1000 euros net more to spend than today

I would be really interested in the property including the building... to which you say "extension is not possible"... here there are users who pull solutions out of the hat that you haven't thought of before,

I often pass by a house where the roof was simply lifted, fitted with dormers, and the roof pitch was changed. This way, you really get a lot of space out of it.
