Hello community!

Has anyone of you had any experience or already requested a quote for an individual FTTH connection? I know that it easily costs a five-figure sum, but I would still be happy if someone has already done that / requested a quote and can tell us a bit about it. Our potential new residential area is unfortunately in the digital Stone Age. The "up to x Mbit" DSL connections available there from the only provider are probably not sufficient for our needs. So we are looking for the "FTTH, no matter the cost" connection. ;)

For streaming and video chats, we especially need sufficient upstream. Are there nowadays alternatives that provide decent bandwidths (also up) not via underground cable, and where the latency is also still okay (I’d say max. 30-40ms)? We thought about Starlink, but that is probably not quite mature yet, or Magenta Speedbox XL? According to the map, Telekom at least has 5G in the region. What bandwidth you can expect in the end, I don’t know.

Best regards

I also participate here sometimes ;)

- Starlink: Latencies too high
- Telekom Hybrid connection, i.e. DSL+5G combined: Works quite well for a colleague with 16Mbit DSL together with Telekom’s Pro-Router. 3-person household, one of them working full-time from home and the daughter doing remote schooling. After initially searching for a good spot in the house, it fits well
- TV cable development: My brother-in-law privately commissioned it, together with 2 other parties in his street (all new buildings). Costs about 14K for approximately 150m of cable and 3 house connections. That was already in 2014. I would still check it
- Telekom FTTH: Would also be my preferred option, but it depends heavily on the commitment of the local construction district (which you only find out when you order your connection) and the local conditions. Personally, I would already commission a feasibility study now. That cost about 900€ four years ago. As a result, you receive hopefully a binding offer at least that was the case four years ago.

You can / have to inquire directly with Telekom. It doesn't help you much if the nearest node is 2,000m away and then you end up with a six-figure amount. A few years ago, I read something about T€ 15 +X, if you are outside a designated FTTH area, or T€ 6 + €100 per meter of cable installation (if on paved roads, then even more expensive).

In the planned Saar-Pfalz district, Deutsche Glasfaser is partially expanding FTTH. Find out in which towns this is happening exactly. However, this limits the real estate search. Or ask how much a single line would cost for you.

There is (was?) this year in [big city] the offer to have FTTH installed for free even without signing a provider contract. This was handled by Telekom.
So ask Telekom if this offer is currently available in your area (still)
(if not, check with the Federal Network Agency). Best to inquire before the end of this year!

We are waiting for this connection to be installed here soon, although we manage quite well with the existing ADSL.

Fiber optic is certainly the more future-proof connection and will be the standard in just a few years.
Compared to *DSL, it additionally offers the advantage of electrical isolation.
This can be beneficial if lightning strikes nearby, as we experienced a year ago.
It directly destroyed some components here, even though it wasn’t a direct hit (equalizing currents!).

Thank you, yes I know it is very individual. Nevertheless, your assessment already helps me. I just wanted to get a feeling for roughly what one has to reckon with.
