Hello I want to assemble an Ikea kitchen myself and am now unsure about the procedure: A tiled backsplash is to be installed on the walls, that is, wall tiles between the countertop and the wall cabinets. I cannot lay tiles, so I want to have this done by a tiler. However, I actually know it so that the tiled backsplash is done first and then the kitchen is assembled. In my current kitchen, however, it was clearly done the other way around, you can see that the kitchen furniture was assembled first and then the tiled backsplash was installed. Actually, I find the latter more sensible because then the tiler can work much more precisely and lay the tiles exactly up to the edges of the furniture. How did you do it? Hello,
the majority buys the kitchen for a fully built apartment. You should best ask this question to the tiler. If the tiles need to be fitted and thus usually cut, the amount of work is higher and it becomes more expensive. Most of the time, the work is done together with tiling the floor.
Many people no longer want any backsplash because they find it ugly and prefer to install wall panels. This is a matter of fashion, and there will certainly come a time again when people say they prefer natural tiles on the wall instead of such HPL rubbish.

Hello everyone,
I have always done it this way so far, that I first installed the hangers, then the tile backsplash up to the upper edge of the base cabinets, and finally the base cabinets. Recently, however, most tend to only protect the wall in the cooking and wet areas from dirt. Some use a stainless steel sheet for this or a thinner decorative panel matching the countertop. Tiles are of course also possible, but I am always bothered by the dirty grout lines.

Regards, Her Rossi

Well, he will be happy about that...

If I were you, I would discuss with the craftsman whether he likes working around assembled furniture. From what I've observed, when gluing, work is done slightly beyond the actual tile area, but no guarantees—I was only watching the craftsmen closely.
For me, tiling is also more of the rough work that makes a lot of mess. My order would be first tiling, then wallpapering and/or painting, and then assembling the furniture so that it is not damaged.

Then everything really matches,
Best regards

Thank you, that is exactly what I see as the problem: If I have the tiled backsplash done first and the tiler sticks it a bit higher, meaning the wall cabinet and the tiled backsplash would overlap, then I would have to mount the wall cabinet resting on the tiled backsplash????
If the tiled backsplash is installed too low, there would be a gap visible between the wall cabinet and the tiled backsplash.
So actually, the tiled backsplash should be installed AFTER the kitchen furniture installation, right???
I can’t imagine that if the tiled backsplash is laid first, the tiler can install it so precisely.
Best regards

Hello, I think you misunderstood me. When the tiler works, he applies the adhesive generously to the wall so that it goes slightly beyond the actual tile area. The tiles themselves can be placed very precisely within a carefully measured area. However, if you have already mounted cabinets at the top and bottom, he cannot apply the tile adhesive as well, and you then won’t have the edge rows properly fixed. Since you are not doing the work yourself, I would advise you to consult one (or more [ Stichwort Kostenvoranschlag ]) craftsman companies in good time. Since Metod is mounted on rails on the wall, the question is whether at least the upper cabinets should have some tiles going up a few centimeters behind them, so that they have a gap at the bottom as well as at the top due to the rail. Otherwise, the cabinets will tilt slightly forward. I hope I have expressed myself clearly enough, as I find it quite difficult to put the images in my head into words. I would also reconsider Mr. Rossi’s argument about dirty grout if I were you. Although white grout is no longer popular today, my tiles grouted in gray 10 years ago show a different grout gray in the stove area than in the rest of the backsplash. And we don’t fry very much! Best regards
