I personally don't like these stainless steel edges at all because they limit the size of the pan or pot and their placement. Nothing can stick out even a centimeter if you want to use several large pans at the front and back, for example. I've been cooking with induction for 20 years and the edge of the cooktops has never been damaged, not even close. I can't imagine that you could shatter the edge with a pot.

Is there any news from Whirlpool? For the OTROLIG cooktop, I see something about a 2.2 kW booster, and there is nothing stronger on Whirlpool's sites either - maybe under another label (Bauknecht)? Even simpler Miele cooktops have a 3 kW booster, larger ones go up to 5.5 kW (if you even need it).

Hey!

"I can't imagine that you can chip the edge with a pot."
Unfortunately, you can. It happened to a friend with a cast iron pan. However, her cooktop wasn't flush-mounted, maybe that's why, no idea. Anyway, her bad luck was a lesson for me.

What kind of huge pans do you have? Or what do you do simultaneously in several huge pans?
I've never had space problems because of the edge. It's not that thick anyway.

With cooktops with beveled edges, the glass edge can be easily damaged. The plates from Ikea have a thick glass edge, so the risk is lower. However, it doesn't really look nice either. I also have a plate with a stainless steel edge, and since I sometimes let things boil over, water doesn't run off the cooktop so quickly. With a large pan and a big pot, it quickly gets cramped, but it is only a 60 cm plate because there is no space for an 80 cm one.

With two 32 cm pans, you definitely get into trouble.

For the first 15 years, I also had an induction hob with a rim and even though it's low, with large pans the contact is missing and it no longer works (luckily I had gas for that):

I still use my old professional induction hob for very large pots (40 cm or so), there the hob is as high as the rim.

And now I have an 80 cm one without a rim, even from Ikea (Hökwardig), and I'm satisfied with it. I can even put 2 large pans on it at the back. In the picture there is only a 24 cm and a 28 cm (or 30 cm?) pan on it, but you can already see on the right how tight it gets towards the front.

Your friend must have hit the hob extremely hard or from a bad angle.

There is another reason not to buy a cooktop from IKEA. The beeping sounds cannot generally be deactivated. My cooktop beeps with every operation on the touch panel in the default setting. Over time it became annoying and I was able to deactivate the sounds. Now it only beeps in case of malfunctions.
