Hello everyone,

in another thread there was a discussion about whether more people nowadays build with or without a basement. I am curious.

Best regards

If possible, we build without a basement

We have none. For us, it is just a more expensive storage room.

For me, building without a basement is a no-go
- workshop, utility room, storage room
- some also have an office, a party basement, or a sauna there
- probably the only storage room in the house that stays cool even in summer

Rooms in the basement can also be equipped with regular windows if the surrounding soil is removed and secured.

In relation to the rest of the house, the basement is, in my opinion, the most cost-effective room to create.

If you don't know what to do with a basement other than storage, then maybe it doesn't make sense.

I didn’t know that one myself yet

That’s of no use to you with your survey, but interesting to read. Found spontaneously – of course there are more evolving discussions.

Among other things, I built again because I didn’t like our basement. I now wash where the bedrooms are, my cleaning supplies are where I need them. We don’t need a party basement, the living room can be used for that in our house, and musty old dishes clang at the next wedding, not in the basement. If I had a sauna, it would be near the wellness bath, which would be near the bedroom.
If my husband had a bigger hobby, there would be a double garage instead of a normal one on the property.
Bicycles and garden tools don’t have to learn any stairs, and stairs are dumb anyway.
Our office is on the ground floor, close to the family, and supplies are close to the kitchen.

Bulky waste is never brought back up anyway, and the times of cluttering and hoarding are 19th century anyway.
A bunker is no longer needed either.

In our residential area with good soil, there is one or two basements. The money is therefore not buried.

Greetings Yvonne

Cellars are excellent accomplices for illegal bulky waste disposers; you don't have to inflict that on your heirs. Digital photo albums don’t need much space, and you don’t really need eighty square meters of jam jar storage. That’s my personal opinion. My advice differs a bit: I make it dependent on the shape of the terrain. The more a slope on the valley side requires a foundation anyway, the more I consider a cellar worth considering.

Conversely, I see it differently with developed plots with existing cellars under houses that are to be demolished: even on flat land, I think it’s worth examining whether you should really tear out the gift horse along with all house entries.
