Exactly. I keep saying, people buy up to their financial pain threshold. Those who invest money in renovation have less money for the purchase price. There are people for whom stylish living is important (certainly the new build and 200k core renovation faction here in the forum) and many other people who have other priorities in life. Sports, gardening, being in nature, beer, watching TV, etc... these people do not need facade insulation and large-format tiles in Pinterest style. Their own four walls are enough for them, and that’s it. And I think that is the majority of all people. You just don’t notice it so much in your own (internet/Pinterest/house-building forum) filter bubble.

That already sounds a bit derogatory and like thinking in stereotypes. Why does one exclude the other? By the way, I don't belong to any of the mentioned factions. Is there maybe something in between?

I do assume that these people also like to live nicely. There is certainly a good deal of despair and resignation involved. And the knowledge that you simply can’t afford more, at least not if you want to own a house someday.

No, it is not meant to be derogatory at all. And I do not see any exclusion of all shades of gray and other colors. I just want to refer to the surprise about high purchase prices despite alleged need for renovation.

Ok. Then I misunderstood that.

Well, that’s a bit short-sighted.
In our village and the surrounding villages, several friends and even more acquaintances have bought houses in the last 3 years, and none of them were found on a portal or with an agent. In villages it is quite common that for older people it matters who moves into their former dream home. They are even happy to forgo several tens of thousands of euros for that. I know that is hard to imagine for many here who want to squeeze out the last cent even from the last euro.

Just because you live nicely does not mean it has to be expensive. In the end, no one can tell whether the tile cost 20€ or 200€.
