A sink can be replaced and the tiles can even be painted if necessary, but there are a few things you cannot improve:
- Stand toilet, meaning one that is not wall-mounted
- Shower in bathtub

Still okay in a rental apartment, but for me personally each a reason for renovation if I buy a house. Even if everything is functionally fine. Other people would certainly take it as it is.

Right.. The 60s and 70s bathrooms are hardly bearable in their original condition in terms of appearance. We have yet to see one we could have lived with. In the last house, we had a bathroom from BJ 94 in its original condition. It was deliberately kept simple by the retiree builder at the time. That was a lot better than ours in the current rental apartment.

We actually have stand toilets. I don’t think that’s great either and quite unusual for 2000. In my parents’ house, built in ’95, they already installed wall-hung toilets. But whatever. There’s a new cistern (the old ones are yellowed) and that’s fine. It doesn’t pee any worse than on a wall-hung toilet :) We would even have the money for a bathroom renovation but no.... reserves for unforeseen expenses are more important to us nowadays.

Have you guys actually noticed that in all those American house-building soaps there are almost only floor-mounted toilets? I find that super weird.

I would like a toilet with one of those wall-mounted flush systems where the cistern is hanging above and you pull a chain. They no longer exist. The plumber laughed at me. It seems quite practical to me, it would take up much less space in my tiny bathroom. Roller shutters with manual operation are also out of date. I was laughed at for that too.
