Hello dear forum members. We recently bought a house with all the contracts that belong to it. Among other things, this includes a gas supply contract with the company Primagas. This includes a rental tank. The employee offered us a new contract that includes the following conditions:

approx. 15 euros/month meter rent
2.48 euros/sqm liquefied gas (equivalent to 3.93 liters)

Since I found this to be very expensive (monthly installments approx. 150-160 euros), I did some research. An independent supplier would deliver the gas to us at a price of about 42 cents/liter, which would correspond to a price of less than 1.68 euros/sqm.

Now to my problem - unfortunately, I do not yet have the original contract of the previous owners (I hope to get it. It should be from 2008 and could therefore contain a clause that is invalid. That would mean that the removal of the gas tank could not be charged by the company - but this is uncertain)

The plan might be: trying to get out of the contract - either by returning the old tank and the meter and acquiring our own tank, or by trying to buy the 10-year-old rental tank (but I have read several times that companies are rather unwilling to agree to this)

Are there people here who also heat with liquefied gas, or have been in a similar situation (or have been)? I would be grateful for tips and advice because this needs to be settled fairly quickly now.

Best regards

Actually, it is not the house that has the contract, but the owner of the house. That was the previous owner. You don't have anyone with primagas. You should be able to take another solution without any problems, but which one? There is apparently no natural gas, so liquefied gas remains. The tank belongs to primagas. They won't let you have it, bet? Because they don't make money with tanks, but with the right to fill them. So they have zero interest in releasing you. Every other gas supplier is the same. Buy your own gas tank? From when does that pay off? What other alternatives are there? The heat pump needs underfloor heating, geothermal energy is expensive in initial installation. Oil? New heating system needed. Everything is kind of stupid....K.

Why don't you want a rental tank? With a purchased tank, you have to pay for all necessary inspections yourself, also remember and prove them yourself, otherwise you won't get any gas delivered. Especially the 10-year internal inspection of the gas tank doesn't come cheap. A personal tank is not worthwhile just because of the supposedly low price.

The house is now exactly 10 years old. (Year of construction 2008). We have underfloor heating, but I think a heat pump is not the right choice because the insulation values are good for the year of construction but not very good. According to my research, there really doesn't seem to be a natural gas connection, so our first alternative would probably be a purchased tank.

Why don't I want a rented tank? I don't really care in principle, but firstly I have read more often that a purchased tank is always cheaper, and secondly, you are always tied to the one supplier who is much more expensive than other providers. The employee already said during the conversation that 2.48 euros/sqm is cheap - but that is almost 50% more than the very first provider Google gave me who supplies our area. (about 167 euros/sqm). ON TOP of that, there is also a basic fee of almost 15 euros per month. All in all, that’s 150-160 euros/month.

I guess that with a purchased tank, the monthly costs would be (significantly?) under 100 euros. Why do I ask now? Because as soon as I sign the new contract with Primagas myself, I definitely wouldn’t be able to get out of the contract for free anymore, since they have adjusted the clause in the new contracts to be legally compliant. (But I’m not sure how exactly it looks in the current contract, as I (still) don’t have it.)

Is the maintenance etc. really so high that a monthly surcharge of 50-60+ euros for the rented tank is really worth it? That would be 600-720 euros in savings per year. Maintenance etc. doesn’t cost more than 200-300 euros (or am I forgetting something?), plus the one-time purchase. Is the effort really so much greater that such an amount is worthwhile?

Unfortunately, I am completely new to this field and am trying to get a picture of it as best as I can.

To be honest, I did not know in advance that it was a rental tank; this only became clear afterward. But the previous owners offered us a reasonable price, so we would have bought the house anyway. Under no circumstances will we pay the previous owners even one euro for it, so now it is purely about how to best handle the situation.
