As the builder of a house with a clinker brick facade, I can only confirm to the OP that ceramic clinker bricks, meaning those with an exceptionally low water absorption, are outrageously expensive, not only because of the material (since they have to be fired at higher temperatures and the required clay is at least not local "here with us," which causes additional transportation costs) but also because of the processing. I once really delved deeply into this topic. Conclusion: The mortar manufacturers like to pretend that with the right mortar there is no difference in the application. However, the masons don’t want to hear anything about that (apparently with good reason), which is why labor costs suddenly increase by 50 percent. True story. The reference here is the regionally typical facing bricks (which are not necessarily true clinker bricks by definition), which are mostly found in the red color spectrum.
