You are addressing a very important point, but you have forgotten to mention a third dimension: the brick is not alone, but forms a system – however, not only with the joint mortar, but in a triangular relationship also with its format: in the same brick tone-joint tone-contrast, the dominance shifts again depending on the brick format (and by the way, the laying pattern also plays a role). The visual dominance of the joint or the brick does not depend solely on the color contrast, but also on the format (NF has more joint proportion than 2DF); and also how regularly the "joint grid" structures the surface plays a part here. Home builders whose planners ignore the/octameter grid usually have no choice but the wild bond if this grid violation is not to become the mark of Cain on their façades. The consequence of interference when using free/historical formats is also often underestimated or overlooked. The other thing you have to keep in mind: the joint makes a big difference. Should it be inconspicuous and form an even wall from a distance or should it emphasize and strongly outline the individual brick? But that is the second decision.
