Water is actually not a scarce resource. We are in a region with quite a lot of precipitation and collect water from roofs and terraces. This is then also put back into the system through irrigation. The municipalities are glad that there are cisterns. Partially, they are already required. In the event of heavy rain, they buffer the water inflow. The lakes are now well filled here again. Last year it was drier.

Well, you both are in BW... here in the Northeast, things look a bit different...

Be glad about that! But please don't generalize... Search for "Dürremonitor ufz", there you can look at other regions in the country. It looks different there.

Of course there are dry areas. I never denied that. The distribution is the problem.

Just laid perforated hoses for micro-irrigation of the vegetable garden at my mother-in-law's. Water from rain barrel with appropriate pump and timer. I'm curious to see if it works.

If the area allows, I would divide it: one part lawn (preferably partial shade) and then also irrigate this, one part gravel garden or wooden terrace with spot planting to reduce the amount of water.

Micro=drip irrigation? If yes, can that work? I only know the "golf course" lawn from hotel complexes in really hot countries. For weeks it was 40 degrees and so on. But the sprinklers really ran for hours every evening. Especially in a complex in Egypt, that was truly impressively sustainable. I have really never walked barefoot on such a lawn before. It was like a carpet. Really crazy...
