Hello everyone,

we have bought a prefabricated garage (32 sqm) and I am now wondering if the rainwater collection via barrel is sufficient for autumn days?

Generally, the water infiltrates quite well and even during heavy rain it only stays in the holes (construction area), but not in our garden. (Region Darmstadt)

What would be the most sensible way to catch the overflow from the rain barrel now?
Connection to the sewer?
Soakaway?
Simply bury a drainage hose in the garden?

I think a direct connection to the sewer would be a bit exaggerated, but certainly the safest solution.

I have also heard the solution to simply place the barrel on a gravel bed (1 m³).

Best regards and many thanks for your advice,

Rainereiner

P.S.: does anyone know what the connection to the sewer might cost? approx. 10 m

In most cities / municipalities, rainwater that falls on the property itself is not discharged into the public sewer system, because most places only have a sewage system. That means it is not separated into rainwater / sewage. As a result, the rainwater from the properties also has to be passed through expensive treatment plants – and that costs money. Normally, you would have to connect your gutter to your rainwater drainage (drainage / cistern / however). With us, 5 meters cost a hefty €3,000.

Wow, just connecting the garage to your rainwater drainage? Intense. We paid less than €3000 for the entire drainage system of our entire house including connection to the sewer and preparation for garage drainage. And we are talking about almost 50 meters of pipes.

Hello everyone,

we have the problem that we have groundwater from 1m
therefore it is recommended to divert everything.

I was a bit afraid of the costs. The construction company which is preparing the graveling for the garage for me charges about 12 meters for 250 euros.
If I had known that beforehand, I wouldn't have had any sleepless nights.

A well for garden irrigation will be dug.
