I find the descent from the granny flat a bit unusual. Also, the main room is not cozy to furnish. When looking at it with the info of a granny flat, I thought of a single person who has no demands ;) Unfortunately, the washing machine also doesn’t really have space.
The entrance is nicely spacious.
Rounded shower and corner bathtub as well as corner toilet and rounded arches are not at all contemporary... well, a matter of taste.
The pantry cannot be furnished except with a 20cm shelf opposite the door.
The dining area could collide with the chairs at the counter due to lack of space. On the other hand, the living room is mega large.
I don’t understand the little wall protrusions in the hallway and between living and dining. What are they for?
Upstairs there is a large bedroom, but only 3 meters of usable space.
There seems to be little storage space anyway except in the basement and attic. Also, due to many windows, the walls offer no room for cupboards.
The bathroom is like a dance hall. After showering, you have to pass by a window. Well, at least there are expensive pleated blinds... The first washbasin by the door is unusable because of the door – the person will always be in the way. But the furnishing can be changed.
I don’t have the cardinal directions in mind anymore... I guess the garage is in the west?
I think I wouldn’t feel comfortable in the rooms... somehow everything (except the dining area) is just huge :(
Hello ypg,
Thank you very much for your post. I will try to address the points.
Granny flat:
The access to the granny flat is indeed a bit unusual. In the first draft, we had the access to the granny flat via a second staircase on the ground floor. Unfortunately, this caused a lot of space loss on the ground floor. Therefore, the architect looked for a way to relocate the staircase outside to avoid losing space inside. I think that worked out well.
Hmm, you’re right about the cozy furnishing. There is not much to furnish. In the living room, there is only one wall with 3 meters of space for the TV cabinet. What else would one want to furnish? :-). What do you mean by washing machine? Washing machine? At the moment it is drawn in the bathroom, but it might also be in the utility room.
Entrance:
We like the entrance to be spacious. We currently have a fairly narrow one, and we constantly annoy about it. When several people enter together, everyone stands in each other’s way.
Rounded features:
Bathroom and shower will be angular. The corner toilet will be placed on the north wall and then it’s a normal toilet. The rounded arch will be removed.
Pantry:
Yes, the pantry will now be smaller and move to the wall between hallway and kitchen. It will then measure about 75cm x 130cm. We prefer more kitchen units anyway. My wife really wants a small place to store the yellow bag trash, vacuum cleaner, dishwasher tabs, cleaning agents, etc. The pantry door will be a sliding door. We’ll just hammer shelves into the pantry.
Dining area:
Hmm, the dining area is indeed a bit tight, you’re right. The dimensions are about 3.5 meters wide and 2.5 meters deep. Maybe the kitchen can be pushed in a bit and one element removed. Then we would have about 3.5 meters x about 3 meters. What do you think?
Little wall protrusions:
What is that :-) ? Google finds nothing for this term either. The wall extension between living and dining is there so the kitchen is not so visible from the living area. The kitchen should be visible from the dining area. The dining area should be visible from the living room. But not the kitchen from the living area.
Bedroom:
The usable space behind the door in the bedroom is 3.5 meters. We will combine the windows in the bedroom so maybe there will be another 1 meter on the south wall. In the south/west corner there is also usable space. That is enough for us.
Usable space:
Yes, that’s true, we don’t have much of it. You just can’t have both: many windows and lots of usable space. We chose more windows. We love big window areas. We just have to declutter more often instead of storing everything forever.
Bathroom:
It will be completely rearranged now. See my post no. 7 in this thread.
We had it generous in the past and now live a bit cramped again after moving. That is totally annoying when it is tight everywhere, whether entrance, kitchen, dining, or living. That’s why we tried to make it a bit airier where possible.
