First I thought: the staircase should be turned with 3 children, otherwise it will get too chaotic in the open space as they get older. But then came the note about the basement... so no turning!
With a kitchen/living room switch, there would be the problem that everyone comes through the staircase from above into the living room. Not nice either.
I don't see the space problem in the kitchen, since the pantry/utility room is practically around the corner and quickly accessible. Personally, I don't like the meager space for a wardrobe in the bedroom. Maybe the hallway on the upper floor should be made a bit larger, aligning Sam’s room in size, and the gained space used for the wardrobe. But I don't think that will work out.
One option on the ground floor: living room becomes the office, kitchen moves into the current office, so rotation of the rooms. The facade might become friendlier as a result.
Otherwise, I like the design.
