So I have the rack in the basement, and in a small room two things would annoy me: Threading the barbell into the rack.. (it's 2.2 meters long, so you quickly hit the wall). And the ceiling height! Overhead press hits the ceiling, at least at my height (187).

daniels87, roughly how much space is needed? 2.20m with Olympic bar + X in width and how much space in depth including rack?

Exactly!

Alternatively, also a children's room, provided not all planned children are already there. When the house is finally full, you probably won't get around to sports at home anymore anyway.

Do you have underfloor heating in the basement? If yes, I would definitely check how heavy the thing is... wouldn’t want your screed to give way and damage the pipes.

I have multiplex boards underneath, and on top of that, fall protection mats. At least on one side there should be enough space to get the barbell out easily, so you don't always have to place it diagonally. I do deadlifts in front of the rack, otherwise I would always have to remove the catching rails. I need to measure the whole thing sometime.

Ps: don’t let anyone talk you out of having the space. There is always time for training. Better to skip the TV.

Often people set up a fitness room without having seriously trained beforehand. Then there’s an elliptical trainer and a crappy "multi-power strength station". Of course that won’t work.

An office is unnecessary, for example, I have that at work. A desk doesn’t need its own room.
