Hello everyone,

I am currently looking for a 180cm high fence about 12m long to protect the garden from curious looks. You can find quite a lot on the internet, and most people in our new development area have a double rod mesh fence with the well-known privacy strips. Personally, I don’t like this option very much, so I would like to ask for experience reports if you are satisfied with your WPC/BPC fences? How is the durability? Does the color fade over time due to sunlight? Does the fence warp? Etc....

An alternative for me would also be an aluminum rhombus fence. Would that possibly be the better alternative?

Thank you in advance!

We had a high-quality aluminum fence with a gate and an electric folding gate (4 wings) quoted. At 17m total length, you end up somewhere around 20-25k. Welded wire mesh fence is basically a reasonable choice but not everyone's thing. We also had a glass fence (frosted grey glass) in the selection, but the fear of vandalism is too great. The cost would have been around 17k for 9m including stainless steel posts, but without gate and door. The selection is really huge and finding a reputable provider here is difficult. The internet is flooded with run-of-the-mill addresses for this. WPC was also once in the selection but was quite quickly ruled out again.

What speaks against a hedge?

Space requirements
Maintenance

The hedge will get wider over the years, and if that is not supposed to happen, it requires a lot of commitment around the hedge. I have also never seen an 80-year-old trimming a hedge. That means at some point the maintenance will have to be outsourced, and that in turn are ongoing costs that especially need to be covered in retirement.
I see no pragmatic reason to set up a hedge as a privacy screen. There are other, more sensible ways to give nature space.

My predecessor Allthewayup has already argued it well.
A hedge does look nice, but in the long run, I simply don't want the effort of cutting it down.
Friends of ours, for example, have a cherry laurel hedge as a fence and they cut it back so heavily and regularly that there is no longer any talk of privacy protection.

It also takes a few years until the hedge is big enough to be considered a privacy screen. While you don't have the effort of shortening it at first, you will have much more later on :)
