And who sends them.......?? Why they have no motivation can probably be easily understood, especially when you yourself have slept for 4 weeks in a damp, cold residential container with 8 others, far from home, for €1200/month, minus €500 rent.

A nice example of why you can buy the worker a roll but not the office horse with air conditioning.

You can also do things because they are right and not because you expect something in return.

Because I read a tip for the floorboards...

With us, the garbage collectors have always received something extra before Christmas for what feels like decades. But since they haven't been allowed to accept it for some time now, there just happens to be a pack of cigarettes ready!

For me, it's not about money at all, but about recognition of good work. The mailwoman sometimes also receives pictures of the children and a box of Merci. The waste disposal people change too often now. Otherwise, they also used to get something for Christmas. The cleaning staff in my office also gets something. And now and then a coffee when there is time.

Does the relationship with postal/parcel services and waste disposal companies change so much when you move into a house?

I can say with a clear conscience that I have seen the representatives of the aforementioned services less than half a dozen times since I moved into my current apartment in 2014. Even since Corona and working from home, they just ring the bell and are gone before I am even in the stairwell.

I will also try to implement the hints regarding the drinks in our place. Hopefully, one of the new neighbors will have already moved in by then. Apparently, kids in the neighborhood have drunk everything out of the crates from the shell constructions during the nights of the summer holidays.

I see it the other way around. If people deliver extremely good work even without meals and tips, then they have rightfully earned those tips and meals.

But my attitude is probably also influenced by the fact that when I am on business trips, I am regularly provided with coffee and pastries, canteen meals, and evening restaurant visits both by the client and my own employer. And if someone at home works hard for me and delivers good performance, they should be treated just as well. Without me expecting anything in return.
